ELSEWHERE, CLOSER STILL

They had not walked before. They had not yet known land. The first of them stumbled, bruising new flesh and bleeding black blood onto Lastings' dark shore. A blessing. A curse. Saltwater flowed around their ankles, and with each push of waves another of their number stepped for the first time from the water. Each more confident than the last. The sea walked with them.

Some were thin as pity. Some were fat as night. Some snapped, some snarled, some smiled like sharks at the bite. They were a shoal pulled from the depths of memory and given form most landers would proclaim beautiful. For that was their purpose: they were temptation given form. They were the light in the dark of the trench.

Behind that light yawned the great mouth of the sea and its many jagged teeth.

The shoal spilled into Lastings and snaked through the town's narrow streets, becoming steadier on their lander feet as their hunt progressed. Above them, the stars dared not show their brash faces, and clouds stuttered protectively toward the moon. No birds called. The sea lay impossibly still.

At the horizon, green light flashed once.

Lander homes were designed to keep out lander hands. The shoal did not knock on locked doors nor rattle barred windows. They did not need to be inside. They merely required those chosen to step outside. In short order, the shoal arranged themselves outside the containers of the chosen, and there waited.

In the homes, in the beds, in the ears of those chosen, the sea whispered. Salt carried her to the sleepers. Salt touched their faces. Salt lured them from their homes to those who waited in the dark, each of the shoal smiling beautifully.

Green light flashed a second time.

The shoal opened the mouths of their bellies.

The humanoid bodies of the anglerfish ruptured at the torso with a cacophony of skeletal cracks, shredded flesh revealing the abyssal maw each contained within. Hunger acted in place of their muscle and sinew as their impossible bodies lurched into a hunting formation. They would exist as long as the sea demanded, before returning with her spoils. Urine steamed on the ground as one of the chosen roused from sleep, but far too late. The moon drew a veil over her eyes.

As one, the shoal moved to feast.
